Hey there! I’m Coffee Cup, and it’s a pleasure to bring to you my passion for my namesake—coffee!
I’m often asked about the different definitions used to describe my kind. We are very misunderstood in the hot beverage world. For instance, my friend Cupp’O Tea has very few terms associated with his family. They are described as bulk, bagged, sweetie, hot or iced tea. All are fairly self explanatory, and few questions are asked of them.
For me, it’s quite a different story.
We come in so many varieties, with so many different adjectives to describe us that it can get sort of confusing. We come in hot and iced, not to mention light roast, medium roast, flavored, or dark roast. You can order us in whole bean, drip grind, espresso grind, fine grind, Turkish grind etc.
The absolute most confusing term is BOLD. I get asked all the time “what is bold coffee”? I myself am a very bold cup, but it’s more than personality!
Does it describe a certain roast, or a blend, or a grind? Does it have more caffeine than regular coffee?
Bold coffee can come in many varieties, and has nothing to do with the roast, the blend or the amount of caffeine. The term “bold” describes an intense, rich and robust flavor that has a full body. Bold coffee is about the flavor. There are light and medium roast bolds, as well as dark roast bolds.
It’s all a matter of taste, and may take a few trials to discover your favorite. When you feel like you can outlast that familiar battery rabbit… you may want to switch to decaf, and there’s a bold for that too!
